A sailboat this small usually has a retractable keel called a daggerboard. and for it to be retractable, this design has a locker built under the middle thwart that is basically an open hole from. Build the ribs using the 2 by 4 lumber. cut the gussets to strengthen the rib joints from 1/4-inch marine plywood. similar to the ribs on the human body, the ribs secure the rest of the boat's structure.. Make sure your boat is square. take diagonal measurements from corner to corner, make sure the boat parts are parallel to each other, etc. because if there's a twist in your boat, the next step will make it permanent, which will affect the boat's performance..
Twist a small hole, about a half-inch deep, into the bottom of your boat and near the middle (though not directly underneath the mast) and inject some hot glue into it. push the end of the keel and ballast away from the washer into the hole and hold it until the glue dries and it is secure. this will make sure the boat does not capsize.. Our collection of sailboat kit designs from 8 to 31 feet. strong, lightweight okoume plywood means strong, lightweight sailing craft. most of our sailboats can be cartopped, all of them sail beautifully, and all of them are easy to build.. The “southwind” is a free sailboat plan to fill this need at relatively low cost and with little labour. the old round-sided sailing dories of new england, and the sea-bright skiffs of new jersey prove that the flat-bottom may be combined with rounded topsides to make a seaworthy small boat..
